The Best Fall Road Trips in the Ottawa Valley

Sep 4 2026·7 min read
Slow drives, secret lookouts, tiny cafes and five coffee stops worth building a day around. Our favourite fall road trips from Somewhere Inn Calabogie.
Stay the weekend

Slow drives, secret lookouts, tiny cafes and the kind of autumn days you wish could last forever.

There's something about fall in the Ottawa Valley that makes you want to take the long way.

Not the fastest way. Not necessarily the most direct way. Just the prettiest way.

Windows cracked open to that crisp fall air. A coffee warming your hands in the cupholder. A playlist you've heard a hundred times. Golden forests stretching along winding backroads, with the occasional sign for a little town you've never stopped in before.

And, of course, a few stops along the way.

This is our favourite kind of fall road trip from Somewhere Inn Calabogie : a little bit of wandering, a little bit of eating, a good lookout (or two), and plenty of time to pull over whenever something catches your eye.

So grab a sweater, fill up the tank and leave a little room in your day for getting pleasantly lost.

Calabogie to Eganville: The Pretty Way

For a shorter road trip with plenty of opportunities to eat, explore and stop for a wander, head north from Calabogie toward Eganville.

This is one of those drives where the destination almost feels secondary. The roads wind through forests and farmland, and every few minutes there's another stretch of scenery that makes you want to slow down.

When you get to Eganville, make a lunch stop at Rio Tap & Grill . Located right along the Bonnechere River, it's a relaxed spot for a proper lunch after a morning of exploring.

Then take your time wandering around town before heading back toward Calabogie.

And if you're not quite ready to come home yet? Take the long way back.

That's the whole point.

The Whitewater Valley Wander

For a full day of fall colours, good food and river views, head west toward the Whitewater Region.

This is a great route when you want your road trip to feel like a collection of little discoveries rather than one big attraction.

Make your way toward Cobden, stopping whenever you spot something interesting along the way. In Cobden, settle in for lunch and a local beer at Whitewater Brewing Co.

Then keep going toward the Ottawa River and Whitewater Region.

One of the hidden gems worth adding to the drive is Westmeath Lookout . With sweeping views over the Ottawa River and surrounding landscape, it's an easy place to pull over, stretch your legs and take in a very big view.

There are picnic areas here too, so if you're feeling ambitious, pack lunch and make an afternoon of it.

This is the kind of road trip where you don't need to conquer anything.

Just drive. Stop. Look around. Eat something good.

Repeat.

Arnprior to Burnstown to Calabogie

If you're coming from Ottawa, this might be the perfect way to ease into a weekend at Somewhere Inn.

Start in Arnprior and make your way toward Burnstown, then continue along Calabogie Road toward the Madawaska River.

Before heading into the countryside, stop at Lumbertown Ale House in downtown Arnprior for lunch. Their focus on local ingredients, Ontario craft beer and made-from-scratch food makes it a particularly good choice when you're looking for a meal that feels like part of the road trip rather than a pit stop.

From there, head west.

Burnstown is worth a wander, especially around the historic bridge overlooking the Madawaska River. Then continue toward Calabogie, where the road winds alongside the river and the landscape starts to feel increasingly wild.

And somewhere along the way, you'll probably find yourself saying:

We should do this more often.

We agree.

For the Big View: Eagle's Nest

Okay, we know Eagle's Nest isn't exactly a secret.

But there's a reason everyone keeps talking about it.

The short hike to the lookout rewards you with a huge, sweeping view over the forests and lakes of the Ottawa Valley. In fall, the landscape below becomes a patchwork of red, orange, yellow and green.

If you're visiting during peak colour season, go early and bring your coffee.

And maybe your picnic.

For an even more relaxed mountain-view experience this fall, Calabogie Peaks is offering its Fall Colours Chairlift Experience from September 19 to October 12, 2026. Ride up above the changing forest, take in the view, then wander the trails at the summit before heading back down.

Sometimes you don't need to hike for the view. Sometimes you just need a chairlift and a warm sweater.

The Ottawa Valley Cafe Crawl

A fall road trip without coffee stops? We don't think so.

One of the best ways to explore the Ottawa Valley is to build your day around a few little cafes along the way. Not drive-through coffee. Not grab it and go . We're talking about the kind of places where you want to sit for a few extra minutes, warm your hands around your mug and maybe leave with a pastry you definitely didn't plan on buying.

Here are five of our favourites to work into your fall road-trip itinerary:

Oh-el-la Cafe - Calabogie

Start close to home with a latte and something delicious at Oh-el-la. It's a beautiful little cafe with a cozy, thoughtful feel that makes it a particularly good place to begin a slow morning. Grab your coffee, fill up the snack bag and hit the road.

Neat Cafe - Burnstown

Make this your stop on the way in or out of Calabogie. Neat is one of those places that is worth the drive all on its own, with excellent coffee, wood-fired pizza and a wonderfully unhurried Valley vibe. If you're heading through Burnstown, stopping here is basically part of the itinerary.

Fifth Chute Coffee - Eganville

Taking the scenic route toward Eganville? Add Fifth Chute to the list. Coffee, fresh sourdough and baked goodies make this the perfect place to stock up before finding a picnic spot along the Bonnechere River. The hardest part will be deciding what to save for later.

Ottawa Valley Coffee - Renfrew

A great halfway point if your road trip takes you through Renfrew. Grab a specialty coffee, browse the local goods and take a little wander around downtown before getting back in the car. Consider it your excuse to stretch your legs.

Ottawa Valley Coffee - Arnprior

If you're starting your adventure from Ottawa, this is a great first stop. Pick up your coffee, browse the local makers and then head west toward Burnstown and Calabogie. From here, the roads get quieter, the trees get taller and the day starts to feel a little more like an escape.

Our golden rule? Don't rush the cafe stops. The whole point of a fall road trip is to take the long way, and sometimes that means ordering another coffee.

Come Back to Somewhere

After a full day of driving, hiking, eating, wandering and pulling over every ten minutes because look at those trees , there's something pretty wonderful about coming back to a place where you don't have to do anything.

At Somewhere Inn, fall evenings are for slowing down.

Come back from your road trip, put your feet up, pour yourself a glass of wine, take a dip in the thermal cycle and watch the last bit of daylight disappear over the trees.

Then do it all again tomorrow.

Because the best part of a fall road trip isn't how far you go.

It's how little you need to rush.

Take the long way. Stop somewhere beautiful. Eat something delicious. Stay awhile.

And if you find a hidden picnic spot along the way, maybe keep it between us.
