Sweet Spring Escapes: Maple Adventures in the Ottawa Valley

One of our favourite things to recommend at the front desk in the spring? Maple season adventures. There’s just something about the Ottawa Valley in that late winter–early spring window – snow still on the ground, sunshine getting warmer, and that unmistakable sweet smell in the air.

If you’ve never experienced maple season here, it’s kind of magical. Sap starts flowing when temperatures rise above 0°C during the day and dip below freezing at night – and it takes about 40 litres of sap to make just 1 litre of syrup.

The best part? Some of the region’s most charming sugar bushes are easy day trips from Somewhere Inn – perfect for a morning outing before coming back to unwind.

Here are a few of our go-to recommendations we love sharing with guests:

Temple’s Sugar Bush

  • Location: Lanark, just west of Somewhere Inn
  • Distance / Drive Time: About a 45-minute drive
  • Cost: Mid-range (pancake meals + maple treats)
  • Why Guests Love It: It’s one of the easiest places to recommend – beautiful, welcoming, and super family-friendly. We usually suggest this as the “classic” sugar bush experience.
  • Fun Fact: The timber-frame building is constructed using traditional joinery – no nails, just hand-crafted wooden pegs.
What Makes Temple’s Special

Temple’s is one of those places that feels like a full experience, not just a quick stop. Set on a 70-acre sugar bush with around 5,000 taps, it’s known for its stunning timber-frame pancake house and cozy, heritage feel.

During maple season, you can enjoy a full breakfast (the buttermilk pancakes are a must), then wander forest trails or stop into the maple shop.

Wheelers Maple Products

  • Location: McDonald’s Corners, southwest of Somewhere Inn
  • Distance / Drive Time: About 50–55 minutes
  • Cost: Mid-range
  • Fun Fact: Wheelers is home to one of the largest maple syrup museums in the region, showcasing how production has evolved over time.
  • Why Guests Love It: This is one of our go-to recommendations for families. There’s a lot to do, which makes it especially fun with kids (and keeps everyone engaged).
What Makes Wheelers Special

Wheelers feels like a full maple experience rolled into one stop – part sugar bush, part museum, part outdoor adventure. You can walk trails, explore maple history exhibits, and then sit down for a classic pancake meal.

Fulton’s Sugar Bush & Maple Shop

  • Location: Near Pakenham, just outside Almonte
  • Distance / Drive Time: About 35–40 minutes
  • Cost: Budget-friendly (vehicle pass + optional experiences)
  • Why Guests Love It: Perfect for families with kids who want space to run, explore, and actually see how maple syrup is made. We often recommend this one if guests are looking for something interactive and outdoorsy.
  • Fun Fact: Fulton’s has been producing maple syrup for over 180 years, making it one of the longest-running operations in the area.
What Makes Fulton’s Special

Fulton’s is one of the most authentic maple experiences in the region. It’s been family-run for generations, and the focus here is really on connecting you to the land and the process.

You’ll find kilometres of scenic trails, interpretive stops, and hands-on experiences like maple taffy on snow. During peak season, there are guided tours and special events that bring the whole place to life.

It’s less about sitting down for a big brunch and more about exploring, learning, and experiencing maple season in a really immersive way.

Purdon Conservation Area (Lanark Highlands)
A beautiful scenic add-on – especially nice if you want to pair your maple outing with a nature walk.

Log Farm Sugarbush (Ottawa area)
A classic, traditional sugar bush experience with hearty meals and demonstrations – great for that nostalgic maple feel.

Maple Season at a Glance

Back at Somewhere Inn

After a day spent wandering sugar bushes, sipping syrup, and breathing in that fresh forest air, there’s nothing better than coming back to Somewhere Inn.

This is usually the part we get excited about when chatting with guests – because the day doesn’t have to end when you leave the sugar bush. Imagine slipping into something cozy, heading to the wine bar for a glass of something local, and then easing into a thermal cycle to fully unwind.

That contrast – crisp outdoor adventure followed by warm, quiet relaxation – is kind of what makes a spring getaway here so special.
