The Edit is our monthly editorial shoot. One day, one camera, one corner of the property, and an attempt to catch the feeling a stay here leaves you with. This one is Collingwood — the wine bar, the grounds, and the patio, in the stretch of summer when the garden is at its fullest and the light holds long past seven. Words and photos by Erin J Coholan of Fourteen Coats.
I wanted someone who has never set foot here to feel the warmth that exists in this space. Intimate, warm, right in the middle of everything in Collingwood and still tucked away and private. Like you can relax and enjoy in your own little world.
That’s what I kept coming back to all day. Your own little world, a few minutes from the middle of town.
Golden hour
There was only ever one hour for this.
Golden hour on this patio is special. You’re surrounded by the historical brick and it feels like you’re in your best friend’s backyard, mixed with the lush trees and that whole backyard feel. The light comes glowing and seeping through the trees. It’s so gorgeous, and it’s naturally unwinding — you can watch everyone settle into it without anyone saying a word.
That’s the hour I wanted in the frames. Nothing else this patio does compares to what it does at seven.
Getting low
The smallest decision I made was where to put the camera.
I wanted to get down nice and low for some of the shots, to be on the level of the friends who were enjoying — to show the POV of another friend just sitting and watching them, on the patio or in the hammock. That was it. That was the whole thought. I wanted the frames to feel included, like you’d pulled up a chair and stayed.
And I was included. The entire time I was shooting we were laughing away and I was sipping on a cider. That’s the day these photos came out of, and I think you can tell.
Every Edit is made and styled with local models and local businesses. If you want in on a future shoot, reach out to Erin at Fourteen Coats.
