More Than a Stay: Why We Became Rainbow Registered

Jun 5 2026·6 min read
There’s a certain feeling people are looking for when they travel - the feeling of being able to fully exhale when you arrive. Here’s why becoming Rainbow Registered was a natural extension of how we think about welcoming every guest to Somewhere Inn Calabogie.
Stay the weekend

There's a certain feeling people are looking for when they travel.

Not just a beautiful room or a weekend itinerary, but the feeling of being able to fully exhale when you arrive somewhere. The kind of place where you can settle in, relax your shoulders, and simply be yourself.

At Somewhere Inn Calabogie , that feeling has always mattered deeply to us.

Hospitality, at its core, is about making people feel welcome. Truly welcome. Not just accommodated, but comfortable. Seen. Safe. At ease enough to slow down and enjoy where they are.

That's one of the reasons becoming part of the Rainbow Registered Program felt so important to our team.

As a Rainbow Registered business, we're proud to be part of a growing community of Canadian businesses committed to creating more welcoming and inclusive spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ travellers and guests.

And for us, this is about building the kind of space we genuinely want Somewhere Inn to be.

Why We Chose to Become Rainbow Registered

At Somewhere Inn, we've always believed hospitality should feel personal.

Whether someone is visiting Calabogie for a quiet weekend away, a nature-filled adventure, a romantic getaway, or simply a chance to reset, we want every guest to feel comfortable from the moment they arrive.

Becoming Rainbow Registered felt like a natural extension of those values.

We know that travel doesn't feel equally safe or easy for everyone. For many 2SLGBTQIA+ travellers, there can still be uncertainty around whether a space will feel welcoming, respectful, or inclusive. Something as simple as checking into a hotel or booking a couples' getaway can come with unnecessary stress or hesitation.

That matters.

We wanted to make our commitment visible and intentional. Inclusivity is part of how we believe people deserve to experience hospitality, and we wanted to put real action behind it.

We want Somewhere Inn to feel like a place where guests can arrive exactly as they are and know they'll be welcomed warmly and respectfully.

"The best hospitality makes people feel at home without ever asking them to change who they are."

What Is the Rainbow Registered Program?

The Rainbow Registered program was created by the Canadian Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC) to help travellers identify businesses that are committed to creating inclusive, welcoming experiences for 2SLGBTQIA+ customers and guests.

The program exists across Canada and includes businesses in hospitality, tourism, retail, wellness, food and beverage, and beyond.

To become Rainbow Registered, businesses commit to meaningful standards around inclusion and guest experience, including:

Inclusive policies and practices

Staff training and accountability

Creating safer, more welcoming environments

Ongoing learning and improvement

Demonstrating a commitment to inclusive hospitality in everyday interactions

For travellers, the program helps remove some of the uncertainty that can come with visiting new places.

Seeing the Rainbow Registered designation signals that a business has taken intentional steps toward creating a more inclusive environment, in practice as well as in marketing.

And in hospitality, those details matter.

Because everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable while travelling.

What Inclusive Hospitality Looks Like to Us

Inclusivity can sound like a big concept, but often it comes down to very small moments.

It's how someone is greeted when they walk through the door. It's creating spaces that feel calm and easy. It's making sure guests can simply relax and enjoy their time away, without a second thought.

At Somewhere Inn, we want people to feel relaxed enough to simply enjoy being here.

That might look like:

Couples unwinding in the sauna after a day outdoors

Friends gathering around a fire with a bottle of wine

Solo travellers taking a quiet morning walk with coffee in hand

Guests spending a weekend reconnecting with themselves, their partner, or nature

Hospitality is built through these everyday interactions.

It's in the check-in experience. The tone of a conversation. The feeling of being welcomed warmly and naturally.

We see creating inclusive spaces as ongoing work rather than a finish line. Becoming Rainbow Registered means we've made a commitment to continue learning, listening, and improving.

That ongoing intention matters to us.

Because every guest deserves to feel respected and comfortable while they're here.

Why Inclusive Spaces Matter in Travel

Travel is deeply personal.

People travel to celebrate milestones, reconnect with loved ones, rest after difficult seasons, or simply take a break from the pace of everyday life.

Those experiences should feel joyful and restorative.

For many 2SLGBTQIA+ travellers, researching destinations and accommodations often includes additional questions:

Will we feel welcome here?

Can we relax?

Will we feel safe being ourselves?

Programs like Rainbow Registered help create more visibility and reassurance around those experiences.

They also encourage businesses across Canada to think more intentionally about hospitality and inclusion, as part of the guest experience itself.

We believe that's a positive thing for everyone.

Because the best spaces are the ones where people can fully relax into the experience of being there.

Calabogie: A Place to Disconnect and Reconnect

Part of what makes Calabogie so special is the feeling of slowing down once you arrive.

The lakes. The forests. The winding roads. The quieter pace.

People come here to reconnect with nature, and often they reconnect with themselves while they're here.

At Somewhere Inn, we've tried to design spaces that support that feeling:

Cozy, thoughtfully designed accommodations

Quiet mornings with coffee and fresh air

Sauna sessions after a day outside

Evenings that feel calm and unhurried

Spaces that encourage rest, conversation, and connection

We want the experience of staying here to feel easy, genuine, and welcoming - the kind of place you can simply settle into.

Whether someone is visiting for a romantic weekend, a wedding, an outdoor adventure, or a solo reset, our hope is that they feel comfortable enough to fully settle in and enjoy the moment.

That's the kind of hospitality we care about creating.

Continuing to Learn and Grow

Becoming Rainbow Registered is something we're proud of, and we also recognize that inclusivity is ongoing work.

It requires listening, learning, and continuing to evolve as both a business and a team.

We see this as part of how we want to operate: thoughtfully, respectfully, and intentionally.

Hospitality should make people feel cared for. And in our view, that starts with creating spaces where everyone feels welcome.

We're grateful to be part of a broader community of businesses across Canada working toward more inclusive hospitality experiences, and we're excited to continue learning along the way.

If you're planning a visit to Calabogie, we hope Somewhere Inn feels like the kind of place where you can truly unwind, reconnect, and be yourself.
