Why We Grow Pollinators & Wildflowers at Somewhere Inn Calabogie

There’s something magical about a summer morning at Somewhere Inn.

The grass still glistens with dew as the sun begins to warm the hills surrounding Calabogie. Bees lazily drift from flower to flower, butterflies dance through patches of colourful blooms, and the gentle scent of lavender hangs in the air. Birds provide the morning soundtrack, replacing buzzing phones and busy schedules, while guests sip fresh coffee on their decks, wrapped in blankets, soaking in the quiet before the day unfolds.

It’s in these moments that you remember how good it feels to simply be.

At Somewhere Inn Calabogie, we believe the best vacations aren’t about doing more – they’re about feeling more connected. Connected to yourself, to the people you’re with, and to the natural world around you. That’s why you’ll find wildflowers growing throughout our property, a flourishing lavender plantation buzzing with life, and countless little reminders that nature always knows best.

Because around here, Proper Days Off begin with slowing down

Growing with Nature

When we imagined Somewhere Inn, we didn’t want to build something that stood apart from the landscape. We wanted it to feel like it had always belonged here.

The forests, rolling hills, wetlands, and rocky Canadian Shield that make Calabogie so special inspired every decision we made – including what we planted.

Instead of endless manicured lawns, we chose wildflowers.

Not because they’re trendy, but because they’re purposeful.

Wildflowers create habitat for birds, butterflies, bees, and countless beneficial insects. They bloom throughout the growing season, bringing waves of colour from spring through early fall while requiring far less watering and maintenance than traditional landscaping.

More importantly, they invite life back into the landscape.

A field filled with native flowers isn’t messy. It’s alive.

Every bloom becomes part of a larger ecosystem where pollinators feed, birds forage, butterflies rest, and nature continues doing what it has always done.

Our hope is that every guest notices something new – a butterfly they haven’t seen before, a bee tucked inside a blossom, or the simple joy of watching flowers sway in the summer breeze.

Why Pollinators Matter

One of our favourite things about summer is hearing the gentle hum of bees moving through the gardens.

They’re incredibly busy, but never seem rushed.

Bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, moths, and other pollinators play one of the most important roles in our environment. Nearly one-third of the food we eat depends on pollination, from berries and apples to vegetables and herbs. Native wildflowers provide nectar throughout the growing season, helping these essential species thrive.

Unfortunately, pollinator populations around the world are declining due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change. While that can feel overwhelming, there’s also hope.

Small actions matter.

A single pollinator garden. A patch of native flowers. A few rows of lavender.

Every flower planted is another place for nature to thrive.

Our gardens won’t solve the world’s biodiversity challenges on their own, but they are our small way of contributing to something much bigger than ourselves.

The Joy of Watching Bees at Work

There’s something deeply calming about watching bees.

Maybe it’s because they’re completely present in what they’re doing.

Guests often tell us they’ve spent twenty minutes sitting in a hammock simply watching bees bounce between blossoms without realizing how much time had passed.

You’ll notice them while wandering toward our Thermal Cycle experience.

You’ll hear them while enjoying a glass of wine as the sun begins to set.

You’ll spot them while reading on the lawn or gathering around the bonfire after dinner.

These are the kinds of moments that don’t make an itinerary but somehow become the memories you take home.

Nature has a wonderful way of reminding us that slowing down isn’t wasted time.

It’s often the point.

Our Lavender Plantation 🪻

One of the most loved places on our property is our growing lavender plantation.

As summer unfolds, the rows begin to bloom into soft shades of purple, filling the air with a calming fragrance that seems to encourage everyone to walk just a little slower.

Lavender has long been associated with relaxation, wellness, and rest, making it feel perfectly at home at Somewhere Inn.

Stopping for photos as the evening light catches the flowers.

Taking a deep breath and letting the scent signal that work, emails, and endless to-do lists can wait.

Of course, we’re not the only ones who love it.

The bees arrive almost immediately, weaving gracefully between each bloom from sunrise until dusk. Watching them work among the lavender has become one of our favourite signs that summer has truly arrived.

Sustainability Is Hospitality

At Somewhere Inn, we believe caring for our guests also means caring for the place they’ve come to enjoy.

Hospitality isn’t only about beautiful rooms or thoughtful amenities. It’s about protecting the landscapes, wildlife, and ecosystems that make this corner of the Ottawa Valley so remarkable.

That’s why sustainability is woven into so many of the choices we make.

Our wildflower gardens support biodiversity.

Our lavender attracts pollinators.

Our natural spaces invite birds and wildlife to thrive.

Together, they create an environment that’s beautiful not because we’ve controlled nature, but because we’ve made space for it.

When we care for the land, the land gives something back – not only to us, but to every guest who visits.

Nature Is the Best Amenity

Of course, the flowers are only one part of the experience.

Spend a day here and you’ll discover that nature quietly becomes the best amenity we offer.

Wake up with coffee on your private deck as birds replace alarm clocks.

Wander through the gardens before heading to the Thermal Cycle for a rejuvenating sauna and cold plunge.

Stretch out in a hammock beneath the trees with a good book.

Explore nearby trails and mountain views before returning to relax around an evening bonfire under a sky full of stars.

Or simply do… nothing.

Sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t another activity.

It’s permission to breathe deeply, slow your pace, and let nature set the schedule.

That’s what Proper Days Off are all about.

Come Experience It for Yourself

If you’re looking for an Ottawa Valley nature getaway where mornings smell like lavender, afternoons are spent beneath the trees, evenings end around the fire, and every day begins with birdsong instead of notifications, we’d love to welcome you.

Our hope is simply that, while you’re here, you’ll find yourself slowing down enough to notice them.
